Garden-Led Development is Green Heart's phased approach to creating or improving planted spaces. We begin by understanding your garden and what you want from it. We then combine detailed site assessment, expert plant knowledge and your preferences to make informed planting decisions in manageable stages.
Rather than committing every plant to a fixed plan before the garden has had a chance to respond, we observe, learn and build on success. The result is a garden shaped around its real conditions, your evolving priorities and year-round interest.

Detailed drawings remain useful when a project involves the size and position of a border, patio, path or other built element. A fixed planting plan, however, is only a snapshot of how a garden is expected to perform at one point in time.
Plants are living things. Their performance is influenced by soil, drainage, shade, exposure, weather, pests, disease and the way neighbouring plants establish. Even a well-researched plant can respond differently in one garden than it does in another.
Our approach is to give the garden time to show us what works. We use the first planting phase to establish the right structure and character, then make subsequent decisions after observing the garden through spring, summer, autumn and winter.
Recommendations are based on the actual conditions in your garden, including pH, drainage, aspect, exposure and existing planting.
You remain involved in key decisions. We help you identify plants you like, then apply our horticultural judgement to create a viable, coherent starting point.
Seasonal development visits allow us to see what is succeeding, where gaps are appearing and how the garden can be strengthened over time.
This is not a standard plant palette applied from garden to garden. It is a bespoke horticultural service for people who want expert guidance, practical support and a garden that is allowed to evolve intelligently.
You may have a blank canvas and need help creating a new border. You may have established planting that you want to retain, edit and enhance. Or you may know that a garden does not feel right but need an experienced horticulturist to help identify why and decide what to do next.
In every case, we work from the same principle: retain and build on what is performing well, address what is not, and make each next step at a pace that works for you.
Once we begin working together, our first step is to understand your garden in detail and agree a practical starting point for its development. This initial phase gives us the information needed to make sound recommendations, explore the plants that appeal to you and identify the right first planting stage.
We assess the practical and horticultural character of the space. This includes pH and drainage testing, measurements, site photographs, aspect and exposure, plus an assessment of existing plants, features and areas that may need attention.
Where a new border, or a change to the size or shape of an existing border, is being considered, we mark the proposed planting area with bamboo canes and coloured twine. This allows you to experience the space before making a permanent commitment. If the border is staying as it is, this step is simply not required.
We prepare a detailed long-list of plants suitable for your garden and brief. It may include trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses and bulbs, as appropriate. Each recommendation includes botanical and common name, height and spread, flower colour and flowering period where relevant, and a Google Image search link so that you can explore the plant visually.
You review the long-list and identify the plants you are drawn to. We then discuss those preferences with you, explain the practical opportunities and trade-offs, and agree the most appropriate initial planting. This will normally include the structural planting, with additional herbaceous planting and bulbs where appropriate to the season and your budget.
We provide a short video walkthrough of the recommendations, so you can revisit the reasoning behind the suggested plants and make decisions with confidence.
Garden-Led Development is designed as a minimum 12-month service because a garden needs to be seen across all four seasons. The service includes four seasonal development visits, each agreed at a mutually convenient date and time and invoiced separately. This spreads the cost rather than requiring the full year of work to be paid in one payment.
Green Heart carries out the detailed paid site survey, including pH and drainage testing, measurements, photographs, aspect and existing planting.
Where a border is new or changing shape, we mark it out with bamboo canes and coloured twine so that you can live with the proposed planting area before permanent work begins.
We produce a personalised long-list of suitable trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses and bulbs based on the site and your brief.
You review the long-list and identify plants, colours and characters you particularly like.
We discuss the shortlist with you and agree the most appropriate first planting phase. This usually prioritises structural planting and may include selected herbaceous plants or bulbs.
We obtain trade prices where relevant and provide a costed quotation for the agreed shortlist before any plants are ordered.
You choose between Green Heart sourcing from trade suppliers or a retail option where that represents better value.
Green Heart can carry out any agreed border preparation and planting. This may include grass removal, clearance, removal of unwanted planting, soil preparation, edging, compost or mulch, depending on the project. You may alternatively undertake these elements yourself.
We visit in spring, summer, autumn and winter to assess performance, seasonal interest, gaps and opportunities.
We explain what is succeeding, what needs adjustment and where additional planting could strengthen the garden.
We update the long-list or shortlist as the garden develops and your preferences become clearer.
We add planting and make improvements as agreed, repeating the process for as long as you wish to continue.
The first year establishes a sound foundation and gives us four distinct opportunities to learn from the garden. After that, you may continue Garden-Led Development for as long as you would find the ongoing guidance and seasonal improvement valuable.
Plant costs are quoted separately from advice, development visits and planting work. Before anything is ordered, you will receive a clear plant quotation based on the agreed shortlist.
We source plants through our preferred trade suppliers where this offers the best option for quality, availability and value. A transparent 15% sourcing fee is added to the applicable trade price.
Where a retail option is more cost-effective, we will identify it. You may purchase plants yourself, or Green Heart can source them at the retailer's stated price. We do not add a sourcing fee to retail plant prices.
The route is your choice. Our role is to give you clear information and help you decide what represents the best value for your garden.
Garden-Led Development is intentionally flexible. Your quotation will set out which elements are included in each phase of your project.
Every garden, starting point and ambition is different, so Garden-Led Development is quoted in phases. This allows you to understand the cost of each stage before you commit to it, and means you do not need to pay for a full year's development or all planting work up front.
The first paid phase includes the detailed site survey, any required temporary border layout marking, personalised planting long-list, plant-selection discussion and recorded walkthrough of your recommendations. The following figures are indicative starting ranges, not a final quotation.

No responsible horticulturist can guarantee that every plant will survive indefinitely. Plants are living things, and their performance can be affected by exceptional weather, pests, disease and other conditions that cannot reasonably be foreseen.
The purpose of Garden-Led Development is not to remove every risk. It is to reduce avoidable replacement risk by starting with sound assessment, establishing the right foundation, observing performance through all four seasons and building each next phase around what the garden is showing us.
With a fully fixed scheme, a plant that performs unexpectedly poorly may need replacing at the garden owner's cost before there has been an opportunity to learn from the site. A phased approach allows future choices to be informed by real performance, helping you invest progressively and with greater confidence.

The position and shape of a border affects how a garden looks and feels, and we are happy to offer general ideas about how planting might relate to existing or proposed features.
Where a project requires detailed hard-landscaping design or construction, such as patios, paths, walls, levels or drainage works, this is outside Green Heart's remit.
